A blackout curtain is one that would benefit any home that requires drapes that are required to block out light. The reasons for wanting to block out light may be many and varied but such curtains can definitely help sleep.

There are people who are used to rising late after being awake for a greater part of the night and such people do need to sleep and not be disturbed by the sunlight coming into the room. There are other homes that have bedrooms that face the rising sun and in the summer this could mean the light from the sun coming into the room at times that are not considered normal for rising. Other people may be working nights and need to catch up on their sleep during the day. It is a fact that those who miss out on spending time in the total darkness that comes with nighttime may have melatonin deficiency as such hormone is produced by the body only in periods of darkness. Blackout curtains can also be very useful where the home faces busy streets that have street lights.

A blackout curtain in a room can also help to reduce energy costs. Such a curtain would keep out the sun during summer and serve as some form of insulation in the winter so that heating costs are reduced. A blackout curtain is normally made from very dense material and is heavy enough so that they drape easily and help to block out light and ultra violet rays. This can help to reduce the fading and deterioration of furnishings and furniture in a room.

Blackout curtains can be hung on curtain in addition to the normal drapes, though this may mean extra hardware for hanging them. A blackout curtain can also be made so that it is fixed to the window frame with a frame or by Velcro.
